The function of this position is to create and edit the Classical Music and Night Life sections of Goings On About Town, and to write about music for newyorker.com. A good candidate is passionate about a wide range of music and has a strong critical voice, excellent editorial and organizational skills, and an ability to meet deadlines.
Primary Responsibilities: Write, assign, edit, and fact-check listings for the Classical Music and Night Life sections of Goings On About Town, in the weekly magazine and on the Web site. Write engaging Web posts with a strong critical voice about the music scene at least twice a week for newyorker.com. Ensure quality of writing across all platforms, including editing with meticulous attention to detail. Meet daily and weekly Web and magazine closing schedules. Engage readership via social media and newsletters. Desired Skills and Qualifications: A strong, clear critical voice and the ability to write well about all kinds of music. At least two years’ experience as a music writer. Access to a network of freelance music writers for assigning short reviews across the music spectrum. Ability to edit for clarity and elegance. Strong organizational and communication skills. Understanding of the style and values of The New Yorker. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
