Robert Mueller charges Paul Manafort with yet another crime

Special counsel Robert Mueller charged Paul Manafort and his lobbying business partner Konstantin Kilimnik with obstruction of justice Friday.

Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager, was already facing up to 100 years in prison on charges of money laundering, tax evasion, bank fraud and foreign lobbying violations before the Friday announcement. After those charges were filed, Mueller’s team alleges, Manafort and Kilimnik called and texted two former colleagues over the past five months in an effort to get them to lie to investigators about Manafort’s lobbying activity.

The new obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice charges were revealed in an indictment Friday.

According to the indictment, Manafort and Kilimnik’s outreach to their former colleagues — 16 messages and five calls in total — was part of an effort to convince them to lie to federal officials about Manafort’s lobbying work for the Ukrainian government.

Manafort is currently facing charges that he organized a lobbying scheme for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine in both Europe and the U.S., which he financed with with offshore funds.
