Argentina is one step closer to legalizing abortion

Argentina took a historic step toward legalizing abortion Thursday as the country’s lower house of Congress held its first ever vote on the issue. The pro-choice legislation passed narrowly, 129 to 125.

The legislation has been introduced in Congress seven times since 2006, but this was the first time it went to a vote. It now goes to the more conservative Senate, where high public pressure could lead to another “yes” vote. Argentina’s president has said he won’t veto the bill if it passes.

The legislation would allow abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. Current law punishes women who have abortions with up to four years in prison, except in cases of rape or danger to the mother’s safety.
